India: 22 hospitalized, 2 dead from the Mumbai Marathon

An annual marathon held in Mumbai India saw the fall and death of two runners, one of them a 74-year-old man, according to a police official.

Twenty-two participants in the running event on Sunday were admitted to the hospital for various reasons, including dehydration, the official stated.

The deceased has been named Rajendra Bora, 74, of Mumbai, and Suvradeep Banerjee, 40, of Kolkata.

The Mumbai Police claim that Bora unexpectedly passed out on Marine Drive, forcing onlookers to take him to Bombay Hospital. Regretfully, upon his arrival, medical professionals declared him deceased, blaming his passing on a heart attack.

After Banerjee, who is running the entire marathon from Worli passes out, the police must hurry him to Nair Hospital.

Upon examination, Nair Hospital doctors pronounced him dead, and the cause of his death is still being looked into.

Mumbai Police have opened investigations into both occurrences at Azad Maidan and filed complaints under ADR. The winners of the men’s and women’s divisions were Ethiopian runners Aberash Minsewo and Hayle Lemi Berhanu.
