Early on Sunday, a fire destroyed approximately 800 shelters and left thousands of Rohingya refugees homeless in a camp in southeast Bangladesh, according to officials.
Just before one in the morning (1900 GMT), the fire broke out at Camp 5 in Cox’s Bazar, a border district with Myanmar, and was contained within three hours by fire department officers and volunteers from the Rohingya community.
Mohammed Mizanur Rahman, Bangladesh’s Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner in Cox’s Bazar, stated that in addition to residences, several other establishments, including learning centers, were utterly destroyed. He also added that there were no injuries.
The deputy head of the Bangladeshi government responsible for refugees, Muhammad Shamsud Douza, stated, “We have made all the arrangements. They are being given food and temporary shelters.”
In the border district of Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh, around a million members of the Muslim minority from Myanmar reside in cramped camps made of bamboo and plastic, the majority having escaped a military crackdown in 2017.
The government authorities have informed us that an investigation will be conducted to determine the cause of the fire, even if it is still unknown at this time,” the UNHCR stated.
