UAE: This Month, The Ministry Forbids Fishing for Two Species

According to a statement released by the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MoCCAE), fishing of two species was prohibited in the United Arab Emirates in April.

The MoCCAE, which establishes regulations for the fishing and trading specific fish species during their breeding season, states that the prohibition will remain in effect until 2026.

Since April is the Golden trevally (Gnathanodon speciosus) and Painted sweetlips (Diagramma pictum) mating season, fishing is forbidden from April 1 to April 30.

According to the MoCCAE, the goal is to control commercial fishing to protect the sustainability of fish stocks in UAE waterways and improve food security in the nation.

To do this, the Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Endangered Safety Authority has also scheduled a two-day awareness campaign to control the hunting and commercializing of specific fish species, which will begin on Monday.

The campaign will target the seafood stores inside complexes and all of the fish markets in the Emirates. It will also target import and re-export businesses that deal with fish goods in the Abu Dhabi emirate, lodging facilities, dining establishments, and central kitchens.

In the meantime, the new law has rendered the ministerial decision that controlled the fishing and trading of King Soldier Bream and Goldlined Sunbeam.
