Four self-driving vehicles will race simultaneously at the Yas Marina Circuit on Saturday, creating racing history.
The Aspire Abu Dhabi Autonomous Racing League (A2RL) will feature eight teams competing for a $2.25 million prize pool in this ground-breaking competition.
The competition’s first edition, regarded as the largest league of its kind globally and a key milestone in motorsport history, is projected to draw over 10,000 fans.
Thanks to a collaboration with Japan Race Promotions, the competing teams of engineers and programmers will each have exclusive access to identical Dallara Super Formula SF23 cars. The Technology Innovation Institute (TII) has designed and integrated autonomous racing stacks, enabling these cars to operate autonomously. The only thing that varies is how each team trains its cars to drive using its machine learning software development knowledge, AI algorithms, and coding prowess. With a top speed of 300 mph, these race cars are currently acknowledged as the fastest in the world, behind Formula One.
Additionally, an AI vs human car race will unfold, with the TII pitting its autonomous car against former F1 driver Daniil Kvyat. TII will aim to get as close as possible to the human lap time and will also demonstrate the autonomous car’s ability to drive without GPS assistance.
