UAE: Do You Experience Cyberbullying or Invasions of Privacy? Here's How you Report Online Fraud

As technology becomes more and more integrated into our daily lives, there are a number of challenges that come with using the internet, including fraud, cyberbullying, and even violating digital privacy through unauthorised photography.

Online risks affect every organisation and every person. Nonetheless, the United Arab Emirates has passed legislation designed to protect people and organisations from these internet dangers.

On January 2, 2022, Federal Decree Law No 34 on countering rumours and cybercrimes came into force. According to the law, there are offences and sanctions for anyone who makes or uses an electronic website or other information technology tool for the purpose of hacking, attacking, or tampering with government information systems and data, spreading false information, or disseminating information that jeopardises the interests and security of the United Arab Emirates.

Invading someone’s privacy by taking, sharing, and storing pictures of them without their permission is illegal in the United Arab Emirates and carries a maximum fine of Dh500,000 as well as jail time.

Cybercrimes can be reported online, by calling 999 for assistance, or to the local police station that is closest to you.
