Malabar Group Receives an Interim Injunction Against "Defamatory" Boycott Posts From an Indian Court

Malabar Group, the parent company of Malabar Gold & Diamonds, filed a defamation lawsuit after an offensive social media post about the brand went viral. The Bombay High Court has granted an interim order in the case. The case was brought against specific individuals who launched a targeted social media campaign against the international jeweler, claiming that the company favored one community over another in its social welfare programs and advocated for a boycott of Malabar Gold & Diamonds.

The jewellery company claimed to have engaged in various social welfare initiatives, including giving over 77,000 female students educational scholarships. Even after allocating over Rs256 crores (Rs2.56 billion) to these commendable endeavours, the offenders exploited a picture from a Karnataka school to disparage the brand.

Malabar Gold & Diamonds claimed that the social media post was meant to cause irreversible damage and harm to the brand’s impeccable reputation. They filed an interim application in the Bombay High Court seeking restraint against the false propaganda. The social media platforms quickly removed the offensive post. In an urgent hearing held on May 9, Justice Bharati Dangre sided with Malabar Gold & Diamonds, issuing an interim order against the accused.
