Amid stalling talks on a Kiev aid deal in Congress, US President Joe Biden will host his Ukrainian colleague Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House on Tuesday.
Zelensky will be making his third trip to Washington following the commencement of Russia’s conflict with Ukraine in February 2022.
Officials said that Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and Republican Leader Mitch McConnell had invited Zelensky to speak at an all-senators meeting on Tuesday morning, CNN reported.
The leader of Ukraine will also meet with House Speaker Mike Johnson.
The purpose of the White House meeting, according to a statement released on Sunday night by White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, is to “underscore the US’ unshakeable commitment to supporting the people of Ukraine as they defend themselves against Russia’s brutal invasion.”
The presidents will talk about Ukraine’s pressing needs and how important it is that the US continues to help it at this crucial juncture as Russia steps up its missile and drone attacks against that country, she stated.
In a series of meetings on Tuesday, the Presidents will also talk about “further defense cooperation,” the office of the Ukrainian presidency said in a statement, which CNN cited.
