Sharjah Police Chief Reassures Residents After Reports of Strong Fuel-Like Smell Across Sharjah and Dubai

Residents across parts of Sharjah and Dubai have reported a strong smell like fuel or gas, prompting Sharjah’s police chief to assure the public that nothing is wrong. No source has been announced.

Lt Gen Abdullah bin Amer told Sharjah’s Direct Line radio programme on Tuesday afternoon that the situation was stable and posed no threat. Sharjah Police did not say what was causing the smell when asked by The National.

What residents reported

People in parts of both emirates said on social media and other platforms that they could smell something similar to fuel or gas. Complaints of this kind tend to spread quickly online. An unexplained smell naturally worries people, particularly near homes, schools and workplaces, and short posts can create the impression of a larger incident than the facts support.

Many residents asked the same questions. Was there a leak? Was it safe to open windows? Should children stay indoors? The police statement answers the most pressing one directly: officials say there is no danger.

What officials have said

Lt Gen bin Amer acknowledged the complaints. He said the authorities had noted reports of odours spreading across Sharjah and neighbouring emirates, and that the situation was safe and stable with nothing posing a threat.

He added that the relevant federal authorities were investigating and would provide updates as they became available. The reference to federal bodies suggests the inquiry extends beyond a single emirate’s police force, which is consistent with the reports coming from more than one area.

Dubai Police and the emirate’s municipality have also been approached for comment. The statement from Sharjah’s police chief was the main official response available at the time of reporting.

What remains unknown

Several important details have not been made public:

  • The source of the smell
  • Whether it was linked to a particular facility, activity or weather condition
  • How long it is expected to last
  • Which neighbourhoods were most affected

Until investigators publish findings, it would be irresponsible to speculate about a cause. Odours can travel far under certain atmospheric conditions, and identifying the origin often takes testing and cross-checking by environmental and civil-defence teams. For now, the official position is that there is no risk to residents.

Staying informed and what to do

Authorities usually advise residents to rely on official channels, such as police accounts, municipality announcements and state media, rather than unverified messages. Forwarding unconfirmed claims can cause needless alarm and may even breach the UAE’s rules on spreading false information.

Anyone who believes there is a genuine gas leak or immediate danger should leave the area and call the emergency number, 999. People who simply wish to report an odour can contact their local authority through its usual reporting channels, noting the time and location, which helps investigators narrow down the source.

Residents with respiratory conditions who feel unwell should seek medical advice in the normal way, regardless of the cause.

A reminder of the value of clear communication

Episodes like this show why quick public statements matter. A short, calm message from a senior officer can prevent rumours from taking hold. At the same time, reassurance carries more weight when it comes with an explanation, and the public will be waiting for the federal investigation to say what the smell was.

The Emirates Times will update this story as officials release further information.
