Falconry has always occupied a special place in Emirati culture, but few moments have captured its enduring prestige quite like the sale that closed out this year’s Abu Dhabi International Hunting and Equestrian Exhibition, known as ADIHEX. A Gyr Pure Ultra White falcon sold for Dh2.1 million — around $571,000 — making it, by a comfortable margin, the most expensive falcon ever sold at auction anywhere in the world.
The sale took place during the exhibition’s final falcon auction, held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler’s Representative in the Al Dhafra Region and Chairman of the Emirates Falconers’ Club. ADIHEX 2026 was organised by ADNEC Group in partnership with the club, an event that has grown over nearly two decades into one of the region’s most closely watched gatherings for falconry enthusiasts, breeders and collectors.
What Made This Bird So Valuable
The falcon that set the new record originated from a breeding farm in the United States and belongs to a category prized above almost any other in competitive falconry circles: the Gyr Pure Ultra White, distinguished by its rare white plumage, pure bloodline and striking physical presence. Buyers in this market pay close attention not just to appearance but to lineage and physical condition, with birds undergoing rigorous evaluation against international standards before they ever reach the auction floor.
Bidding for the bird was intense, according to organisers, with competing buyers pushing the price well past the exhibition’s previous benchmarks before the winning bid was finally accepted. The result eclipsed the earlier global record for a falcon sold at auction — a pure mottled Gyrfalcon that fetched $467,000 at the International Falcon Breeders Auction in Riyadh back in 2021 — by a significant margin.
A Season of Record-Breaking Sales
What made this year’s ADIHEX auctions particularly notable was that the Dh2.1 million sale wasn’t an isolated spike. It capped a run of increasingly high-value transactions across the exhibition’s eight-auction programme. A Qarmousha Pure Ultra White sold for Dh1.5 million earlier in the exhibition, setting what was then a new record for this year’s event, before a Gyr Pure Ultra White chick fetched Dh1.1 million just a day later. Even the exhibition’s opening auction saw spirited bidding, with a Jeer Pure Super White falcon selling for Dh250,000 after a buyer raised their offer from Dh210,000 in a single dramatic move.
This year’s programme also featured 55 leading local and international falcon breeding and care farms — up from 46 the previous year — reflecting the growing scale and international reach of an event that draws bidders both in person and through a dedicated online auction platform for remote participants around the world.
Falconry’s Deeper Meaning
Beyond the headline figures, the record sale speaks to something organisers and officials consistently point to: falconry’s role as a living link to Emirati heritage, rather than simply a hobby for the wealthy. ADIHEX has positioned itself explicitly as a platform for preserving that tradition, combining competitive auctions with heritage displays, breeding showcases and educational programming aimed at passing the practice on to younger generations.
For breeders, a record-setting sale like this one carries weight well beyond the individual transaction — it signals to the wider international falconry market that Abu Dhabi’s auctions are where the most exceptional birds now command the most serious money.
