Emirates has raised the bar for premium economy travel once again, unveiling what the Dubai-based carrier is calling a world first for the cabin class: a premium economy seat fitted with an electrically operated privacy screen.
The new seats will make their debut on the airline’s newly delivered Airbus A350 aircraft, marking the first time Emirates has offered a fully electrically powered premium economy product. Where previous versions of the cabin relied on manual adjustments, passengers will now be able to control both their seating position and their privacy divider at the touch of a button.
A screen that goes up — and locks
The headline feature is a divider positioned between neighbouring seats that passengers can raise or lower and lock into place, giving them the option of extra privacy while sleeping, working or eating a meal without needing to negotiate space with the person seated beside them. The same set of controls doubles as the seat’s positioning system, allowing travellers to shift between an upright position, a reclined “lounge” mode, and a dedicated meal setting.
Each seat measures 20 inches wide with a pitch of up to 39 inches, and has been engineered to recline into what Emirates describes as a cradle position — designed so that reclining does not encroach on the legroom of the passenger seated behind, a common complaint among premium economy flyers on other carriers.
Charging, screens and comfort upgrades
The new seats bring wireless charging to Emirates’ premium economy cabin for the first time, supplementing existing USB-C charging points already fitted across the fleet. Tray tables have also been redesigned to include a built-in phone holder, letting passengers prop up a device as a secondary screen alongside the main in-flight entertainment display.
That main display has had a significant upgrade too: a 13.3-inch 4K HDR touchscreen, offering sharper resolution and a larger viewing area than earlier premium economy screens. Emirates is also adding new exterior-facing cameras to the A350, positioned on the aircraft’s left and right sides, which will join the existing forward and downward-facing views already popular with passengers who enjoy watching takeoff and landing footage.
Comfort touches have not been overlooked either. The new seats include Emirates’ U-Dream headrest, a leather design with adjustable wings intended to support the head and neck during sleep, alongside a manually operated leather footrest.
Part of a broader premium economy rollout
Emirates first introduced its premium economy cabin in 2022 and has spent the years since steadily expanding it across its network. The new A350 seats represent the most significant hardware upgrade to the product since launch, and the airline has confirmed it is also retrofitting the cabin onto refurbished Airbus A380s and Boeing 777 aircraft as part of a wider, fleet-spanning modernisation programme.
The A350’s premium economy cabin will house the new seats across a 28-seat section, arranged in a 2-3-2 configuration by row. The aircraft is currently deployed across all markets Emirates serves with the A350 type, meaning travellers on a growing number of routes will soon have access to the new hardware.
Why the timing matters
The upgrade lands at a moment when demand for premium economy travel has been rising steadily across the industry, as travellers increasingly look for a middle ground between the cost of economy and the price tag of business class. By pushing further into electric seat technology usually reserved for premium cabins, Emirates appears to be betting that meaningful comfort upgrades — rather than price cuts alone — will be what keeps premium economy travellers loyal to the brand.
For an airline that has built much of its global reputation on cabin innovation, the electric privacy screen is a small but telling signal of where the competitive battleground in air travel is heading next. Next Article
