Dubai has turned the calendar into a countdown. On the morning of UAE Flag Day, the emirate formally opened “National Month”, a programme of celebrations that will run through to the country’s 55th Eid Al Etihad on 2 December.
The initiative is organised by Brand Dubai, the creative arm of the Government of Dubai Media Office, with government, semi-government and private-sector partners. It was launched by Sheikh Ahmed bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Second Deputy Ruler of Dubai and Chairman of the Dubai Media Council.
What National Month is
The idea is to give a month-long shape to what has often been a cluster of separate events. Brand Dubai says the programme will highlight the UAE’s national identity, heritage and achievements, honour the legacy of the Founding Fathers, and recognise the leadership’s continuing efforts to shape the country’s future.
Shaima Al Suwaidi, Director of Brand Dubai, said the aim is to deliver a diverse and coordinated programme with partners across sectors, reflecting national pride and creative expression. Brand Dubai will organise its own events while coordinating with participating organisations so that their activities complement one another rather than compete for the same audiences.
The flagship initiatives
Several named elements have been confirmed so far:
- UAE Flag Day celebrations, which open the programme today, with the nationwide flag-raising at 11am.
- The Flag Garden, which has returned to Umm Suqeim Beach with thousands of flags, according to Gulf News.
- The UAE Parade, one of the signature elements of the month.
- Eid Al Etihad festivities, building toward the national holiday itself.
- “Stories of Our Determination”, a short film competition launched by the Dubai Films and Games Commission, part of the Dubai Media Council. It invites creative talent to tell stories of unity and determination.
Global Village has also announced a drone show for Flag Day. Reports differ on the number of drones involved, so organisers’ final figures are worth checking. More events will be announced during the month, and Brand Dubai says details of dates and locations will follow in due course.
A holiday with a long runway
Eid Al Etihad marks the formation of the UAE on 2 December 1971. This year’s edition is the 55th. The National Day holiday is a fixture of the calendar, but the weeks before it have increasingly become a season in their own right, with schools, offices, malls and neighbourhoods decorating and organising their own activities.
By building a formal programme around that period, Dubai is trying to make the lead-up as meaningful as the day itself. It is also a signal to residents and visitors that the winter events calendar, from festivals to shopping and tourism campaigns, has an official starting gun.
Who it is for
Brand Dubai says the celebrations are intended for citizens, residents and visitors alike. That matters in a city where expatriates make up the large majority of the population. The programme is designed to give everyone, not only Emiratis, a way to take part, whether by attending an event, displaying the flag or entering the film contest.
Residents who plan to display the flag at home or at work should also keep the official guidelines in mind. Gulf News has published guidance on how to raise and display the national flag correctly, aimed at avoiding common mistakes.
Context for the season
The celebrations come at a time of regional tension, and the emphasis on unity carries extra resonance for many. Officials have consistently framed national occasions as moments to reaffirm shared values and loyalty to the country. At the same time, organisers have a practical interest in filling the winter calendar with family-friendly events, supporting tourism and hospitality businesses.
What to expect next
Expect a steady flow of announcements over the coming weeks: community events, cultural performances, shopping promotions and public displays. Brand Dubai has said it will publish the details progressively.
Residents who want to take part in the film competition or the parade should watch official Dubai Media Office channels for entry details and dates. For everyone else, the simplest way to join in is also the most familiar. Raise a flag, and keep an eye on what is planned in your neighbourhood.
