Commercial Bank of Dubai Posts Record Nine-Month Pre-Tax Profit of AED 2.95 Billion

Commercial Bank of Dubai has reported its highest-ever profit for the first nine months of a year, with earnings strengthening through the third quarter even as the lender worked through narrower margins and a demanding operating environment.

The bank said on Wednesday that net profit before tax for the period to 30 September reached AED 2.948 billion, up 4.1 per cent from a year earlier. Net profit after tax for the nine months was AED 2.684 billion.

A stronger third quarter

The quarter itself was the bright spot. Pre-tax profit for July to September came in at AED 1.063 billion, a rise of 9.2 per cent from the second quarter. Net profit after tax for the quarter climbed 9.4 per cent to AED 969 million. The bank attributed the improvement to balance sheet growth, higher operating income and lower expected credit losses, which are the provisions lenders set aside for loans that may go bad.

Operating income for the nine months was AED 4.44 billion, up 0.9 per cent. The modest rise shows that the profit gain was driven less by revenue growth than by lower provisions and by cost discipline. The bank’s own investor presentation says higher non-interest income and lower credit losses offset rising expenses and margin compression.

Lending expands

The balance sheet grew steadily. Net loans and advances stood at AED 109.6 billion at the end of September, an increase of 8.5 per cent from AED 101.0 billion at the end of 2025. Gross loans reached AED 113.5 billion, up 7.7 per cent. Total assets rose 4.7 per cent over the same period to AED 167.9 billion.

Profitability remained strong by industry standards. Return on equity after tax was 21.38 per cent. The bank also reported coverage of 153.14 per cent on its most troubled loans when collateral is included, a measure of how well provisions and security cover potential losses. Capital and liquidity ratios were reported to be above the minimums set by the Central Bank of the UAE.

A tougher backdrop

The results follow a year in which the bank’s growth has been more muted than in previous periods. Profit for the first half of 2026 rose just 1.2 per cent after tax, and the first-quarter result, announced in April, came with a reference to heightened regional uncertainty. Net interest income has also been under pressure, with interest rate movements and competition narrowing the gap between what banks earn on loans and what they pay on deposits.

Against that background, the bank described the nine-month outcome as a record achieved despite a challenging market. The third-quarter pickup suggests momentum is returning, though one quarter does not set a trend.

Capital and digital investments

During the year the bank has also been active in funding and technology. In July, it issued a $600 million Additional Tier 1 perpetual bond with a six-year call period. These securities count toward regulatory capital and give lenders room to keep growing their loan books.

On the digital side, the bank launched UP by CBD in July, a mobile banking service for micro and small businesses. It is also testing tokenised deposits for cross-border payments, an area where several regional banks are experimenting.

Fitch Ratings rates the bank A- with a stable outlook, assigned in January, while Moody’s assigned a Baa1 rating with a stable outlook in July.

Reading the result

CBD is one of several UAE lenders to publish third-quarter figures this week, and the sector as a whole has benefited from solid lending demand. On the same day, telecoms operator du also reported a 10.8 per cent rise in nine-month net profit, to AED 2.4 billion, though the two sets of results are not directly comparable.

For investors, the key questions heading into the final quarter are whether the bank can keep growing loans at this pace, whether credit costs stay low, and how much margin pressure persists. The bank, led by chief executive Dr Bernd van Linder, said it enters the fourth quarter with momentum and a strong capital position.  Next Article
