WASHINGTON: Despite Republican resistance to increasing US military funds, President Joe Biden assured President Volodymyr Zelensky on Tuesday that the US will not give up on Ukraine in its valiant conflict with Russia.
During a press appearance at the White House, Biden stood next to the Ukrainian president and declared, “I will not walk away from Ukraine and neither will the American people.”
Additionally, he stated that Vladimir Putin, the president of Russia, “and would-be aggressors everywhere will be emboldened” if he allowed Ukraine to lose.
After spending the morning meeting with both Republicans and Democrats in Congress, Zelensky expressed cautious confidence about the resumption of the US aid flow.
“I recognized the cues. They were overwhelmingly favorable. However, we are aware that specific outcomes and words must be kept apart. As a result, we will be counting on specific outcomes, Zelensky stated.
The White House’s unity, however, was in stark contrast to the growing division on Capitol Hill, where prominent Republicans are demanding that Democrats approve significant immigration reforms before Ukraine can receive further funding, and some are even questioning the necessity of continuing the fight against the Russian invasion.
