Suhaila Hareb Khalil, a 70-year-old Palestine woman suffering from cancer, puts her right hand on her heart as she is wheeled out to a waiting ambulance at the Abu Dhabi International Airport. Her message, in support of the UAE’s life-saving humanitarian act, is “Shukran.”
She conveyed her profound gratitude and admiration for the UAE’s outstanding involvement in evacuating victims of Israel’s war on Gaza, even if there is a great deal of grief and suffering in her nearly lifeless eyes as a result of the battles experienced back home.
Suhaila, one of the many evacuees transported into the United Arab Emirates for ongoing treatment at local hospitals here, has breast cancer. On Monday, more than 170 Gaza residents—mostly cancer patients and a few injured children—arrived in Abu Dhabi via El Arish International Airport in Egypt. The task of getting as many patients out of the country on Sunday was aided by a four-day cease-fire between Israel and Hamas that was set to expire on Monday but was later extended by two more days. It was, nevertheless, a difficult trip for Suhaila.
