We recently had the honor of interviewing Asma Jan Muhammad, Dubai based Pakistani author, a finance expert, trainer, and inspirer, ready with her upcoming book S.H.O.R.E.: The Ultimate Descent, to showcase at the Sharjah Book Fair, a reputed and prominent platform. Asma has led her journey with a strong belief in promoting tolerance, diversity, and equality, which is reflected in her new book’s storyline. The protagonist of her story, Olive, leads a tale of testament to the indomitable spirit of women breaking through the glass ceilings of societal prejudice, politics, deceit, and opportunism.
Besides holding a reputable position among U.A.E.’s Top 10 Women C.F.O.s for 2023 and several other recognitions in her list, her passion and love for writing have never faded over the years, and it gained momentum with the hit of the pandemic, as Asma started to pen down her thoughts and multicultural experiences formally. Let’s learn more about her journey and her upcoming book through this interview below.
An Overview Of The Career
We started the interview by asking, “Could you tell us something about your career journey? What inspired you to write your upcoming book, S.H.O.R.E.: The Ultimate Descent?”
Asma shared, “I am a finance expert by day and a writer by night. I excel in strategic financial management with dual charters in accountancy from Pakistan and England & Wales and over two decades of experience in various leadership roles within prestigious local and international organizations. Recognized among U.A.E.’s Top 10 Women C.F.O.s for 2023, I combine professional prowess with community service and S.D.G. goals advocacy, particularly sustainability and women empowerment.
I’ve had a passion for writing in English since my school days. My academic achievements and a career in finance and accounting provided ample opportunities to read, write, and reflect on various perspectives. When the pandemic hit, I seized the chance to formally start writing about my multicultural experiences in both Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates in the form of motivational articles and share them through a community newsletter platform. Encouraged by the positive reception, I compiled these articles into a collection called “Reflections,” published last year through Partridge Publishing Singapore.”
“Reflections” was a journey through our struggles, challenging our assumptions and seeking answers to long-held beliefs. It provided a means for our minds to pause amid chaos, untangle thoughts, and organize observations and experiences. However, to delve deeper into specific meanings and determine the best course of action for challenging circumstances, I was encouraged to write “S.H.O.R.E. – The Ultimate Descent.” It is a captivating narrative about a courageous woman who dared to challenge the power politics and the patriarchal mindset in promoting transparency and fairness in a non-profit organization.” She added.
Sharing The Work At Sharjah Book Fair
“Congratulations on your book’s upcoming presence at the Sharjah Book Fair! How do you feel about sharing your work on such a prominent platform?”
Asma replied, “Thank you for your congratulations! I’m genuinely excited to have the opportunity to showcase my work at the Sharjah International Book Fair (S.I.B.F.), especially given its prominence in the literary world. This 42nd edition of S.I.B.F. is set to be its most oversized edition ever, boasting an impressive collection of 1.5 million titles by more than 2,000 publishing houses representing 108 different countries. It will run from November 1st – 12th 2023.
Ahmed bin Rakkad Al Ameri, C.E.O. of Sharjah Book Authority, rightly said, “The Emirate’s relentless efforts have led to significant global milestones, guided by Sheikha Bodour Al Qasimi, who has spearheaded the advancement of the publishing industry in Sharjah, the U.A.E., and the world.”
She continued, “This “destination of pioneers” is a fantastic platform to connect with readers and fellow authors. I aim to reach a wider audience with my message of transparency and fair dealings through this thrilling story of a persistent woman committed to instigating change and profound transformation.
Factors Influencing Storytelling
We were intrigued to learn more about the factors influencing her storytelling skills. So, we asked, “How has your vast experience in finance and your challenges influenced your storytelling, especially in S.H.O.R.E. – The Ultimate Descent?”
“My substantial background in finance has profoundly impacted the storytelling within “S.H.O.R.E. – The Ultimate Descent.” This book explores the intricate nature of organizational dynamics and the quest for transparency, a subject I am deeply passionate about.
Drawing from my struggles and professional experiences as a woman in the finance industry, I’ve crafted the story’s characters and integrated valuable insights into the narrative.
Picture the main character, Olive, as a ship sailing against the current, determined to reach the “S. H.O.R.E.” facing winds of tradition colliding with the storms of transformation! In a world where gender expectations act as formidable headwinds, Olive’s tale is a testament to the indomitable spirit of women breaking through the glass ceilings of societal prejudice, politics, deceit, and opportunism.” Asma Jan Muhammad shared.
A Walk Through Asma’s Writing Process
We further asked, “Every author has a unique writing process. Can you walk us through yours? How do you draw inspiration, and what helps you bring your characters to life?”
She replied, “My writing process is unique to me. It revolves around drawing inspiration from genuine, real-life encounters and astute observations, which are vital in breathing life into my characters. I often find inspiration in the people I’ve met and the challenges I’ve faced in my creative writing. To create authentic characters, I draw from a mixture of personal experiences and the stories of those around me.
As I progress on my writing journey, I remain dedicated to profoundly exploring real-life experiences and the multifaceted fabric of human behaviors. This commitment to delving into the intricate nuances of our existence fuels my creative process and empowers me to convey the depth and authenticity that make my stories resonate with readers.”
Significant Challenges As An Author
Challenges are an inevitable part of any career path. So, we asked, “What were some challenges you faced while penning down S.H.O.R.E.: The Ultimate Descent? Also, what challenges did you face throughout your journey as an author?”
Asma replied, “Penning down “S.H.O.R.E.: The Ultimate Descent” was both challenging and rewarding. One of the main challenges was the emotional rigors of revisiting and reliving some of the arduous experiences I faced in my career. It was undeniably emotionally taxing at times, as they compelled me to delve into the depths of my vulnerability and authenticity. However, it was paramount to me to convey these experiences with utmost truth and genuineness, ensuring that the narrative resonated with raw, unfiltered authenticity.
As an author, this journey has had its share of obstacles, from finding the time to write amidst a busy schedule to refining the narrative to make it engaging and impactful. Yet, with every challenge encountered, I found an opportunity to grow and develop as a writer, and the ultimate sense of accomplishment made it all worthwhile.”
Transparency And Integrity
“Your book highlights the challenges of transparency and integrity in organizational settings. Given your emphasis on these values in your professional journey, can readers expect some real-life anecdotes or lessons interwoven into the story?”
“Indeed, my book prominently underscores the challenges related to transparency and integrity within organizational contexts. It’s a narrative where readers can anticipate discovering real-life anecdotes and valuable lessons seamlessly woven into the storyline. While the book primarily falls within the realm of fiction, it is heavily influenced by my experiences and observations about transparency and fair dealings among power struggles in the corporate world. I hope that readers will not only enjoy this political thriller but also gain insights into the importance of inclusion and empowerment of women in challenging the norms in a gender-biased world.” She shared
Asma’s Favorite Creation
We were curious about Asma Jan Muhammad’s top favorite among her self-written books. So, we asked, “From the books you have written, which is your favorite and why?”
She shared, “It’s difficult to pick a favorite among the books I’ve written, as each one holds a special place in my heart. However, “S.H.O.R.E.: The Ultimate Descent” is particularly meaningful to me because it allowed me to address issues I’m passionate about and share an important message. I have dedicated this book to all the resilient souls who never cease to amaze this world with their ambition and passion.
If you are wondering why the title has periods within, it is a mnemonic of the names of the book’s main characters, something to make readers remember them quickly.”
Future Plans We Asked Asma
“Finally, are there any plans for a sequel or another book in the future? What other topics or genres are you interested in exploring as an author?”
“I derive immense pleasure from this second career as an author, as it provides a wonderful avenue to share my experiences and thoughts with others. Apart from authoring these two books, I have also co-authored two books, “She Dares” and “She is Remarkable,” published by MENA Speakers Dubai, U.A.E., containing powerful stories of inspiring women from around the globe.
As for plans, I’m considering the possibility of a sequel to “S.H.O.R.E.: The Ultimate Descent” to explore further the journey of the characters and the impact of their actions. I’m also interested in exploring different genres and topics as an author, fiction and non-fiction or other forms of storytelling that allow me to address societal and professional challenges in a distinctive and personalized way.” She concluded.
