During the 21st Arab Media Forum, former UAE diplomat, Dr. Anwar Mohammed Gargash, underscored the critical role COP28 UAE will play in showcasing the nation’s commitment to climate change and sustainability. Dr. Gargash highlighted that COP28 UAE is not just a conference but a global commitment, stating, “The UAE is dedicated to creating a brighter, more sustainable future. Our actions, especially in the realm of clean energy like solar and wind, speak louder than words. After COP27, we have further evaluated where we can invest to make a real difference.”
COP28 UAE will also address recent environmental challenges faced by countries in the Arab region and Africa, particularly the devastating impacts witnessed in Morocco and Libya. Dr. Gargash added, “COP28 UAE will be instrumental in finding solutions for these areas facing humanitarian crises due to climate changes. We aim to be at the forefront of these efforts.”
Recent reports suggest that regions like the Middle East and North Africa are particularly vulnerable to climate change, with a majority of their populations living in water-scarce areas. As many as 20 million people in these regions could be displaced because of climate-induced challenges.
The UAE’s strategy for COP28 emphasizes the importance of partnerships and collaboration, extending beyond official discussions. Dr. Gargash concluded, “COP28 UAE will offer a platform for diverse perspectives on topics ranging from forests to agriculture, signifying the broad spectrum of environmental concerns we aim to address.”
