Indian doctors went on strike across the country on Saturday, intensifying their protests in response to their colleague’s “barbaric” rape and murder, which stoked outrage over the ongoing problem of violence against women.
Violent protests broke out in multiple cities across the nation on August 9, following the discovery of the 31-year-old doctor’s bloodied body at a state-run hospital in the eastern city of Kolkata. Tens of thousands of common Indians have joined the demands for action, many of which have been spearheaded by physicians and other medical professionals.
Thousands of people in Kolkata kept a candlelit vigil until the wee hours of Saturday morning. Hands that heal shouldn’t bleed,” read one handwritten sign carried by an eastern city protestor.
The fact that the dead doctor was discovered in the seminar hall of the teaching hospital suggests that she had taken a break during her 36-hour shift there. Sexual assault was verified by an autopsy, and the victim’s parents stated in a court petition that they thought their daughter had been gang-raped.
