Eighteen People Die in a Plane Crash in Nepal

All 18 people on board were killed when a passenger plane crashed on takeoff in Kathmandu on Wednesday, according to media reports from Nepali police. The pilot was saved from the flaming wreckage.

Nepal’s aviation safety record is appalling; over the years, the Himalayan nation has experienced several fatal light aircraft and helicopter crashes. According to media statements by Nepali police spokesman Dan Bahadur Karki, 17 employees and two crew members were on board the Saurya Airlines aircraft.

The pilot has been rescued and is being treated,” he stated. “We have recovered eighteen bodies, one of which is foreign. We are currently preparing them for a post-mortem examination.”

Without providing more information, Gyanendra Bhul of Nepal’s Civil Aviation Authority informed the media that the flight was being carried out for technical or maintenance reasons.

The fuselage of the aircraft was destroyed by fire and reduced to a mere shell in photos released by the Nepalese military.

About a dozen hidden soldiers were on top of the debris, and fire retardant covered the surrounding ground. According to a military statement, the aircraft crashed at approximately 11:15 a.m. (0530 GMT), and the army’s quick response team was helping with the rescue efforts.
