TEL AVIV: On Monday, the US declared that it would support Israel’s war against Hamas and demanded additional humanitarian supplies for the displaced Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.
The third month of the bloodiest-ever Gaza conflict saw ongoing fighting; according to the health ministry administered by Hamas, another 110 people were killed in strikes on the Jabalia camp, which is located close to Gaza City.
Following the US veto of earlier proposals for a ceasefire in the besieged region, the UN Security Council in New York was scheduled to vote on a new proposal.
However, as discussions over the document’s text persisted, the vote was moved until Tuesday, UN diplomatic sources told AFP.
“We must get more humanitarian assistance into the nearly two million displaced people in Gaza and we must distribute that aid better,” US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin stated while on a visit to Israel.
He affirmed that the US will continue to supply “essential munitions, tactical vehicles, and air defense systems” and that it was “Israel’s greatest friend.”
Austin clarified that his goal in being there was not to “dictate timelines or terms” for the conflict.
Austin is traveling throughout the Middle East as worries about the war’s regional spread intensify, with Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen targeting foreign ships in the Red Sea to show support for Hamas.
