Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister, came under fire from the United Arab Emirates on Saturday after he suggested that the Gulf state might assist Gaza’s post-war government.
In an early-morning post on X, UAE Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan denounced the remarks made by the Israeli leader.
“The UAE denounces the statements of the Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, about calling on the state to participate in civil administration of the Gaza Strip, which is under Israeli occupation,” Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed wrote in Arabic.
“The UAE stresses that the Israeli prime minister does not have any legal capacity to take this step, and the UAE refuses to be drawn into any plan aimed at providing cover for the Israeli presence in the Gaza Strip,” he stated.
The UAE, according to Sheikh Abdullah, would be willing to back a Palestinian government that fulfilled the ambitions and goals of the Palestinian people, including independence.
Netanyahu stated in a television interview this week that Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and other nations might help a civilian government in Gaza after the war.
The UAE supports Palestinian aspirations to establish an independent state in the occupied West Bank and Gaza.
Although it has claimed that diplomatic ties have allowed it to get aid into the Gaza Strip, the UAE has regularly criticised Israel over the war and the high number of civilian deaths.
