ODESA, Ukraine: In a jab at Russia, the administration moved the country’s Christmas celebration from January 7, when most Orthodox Christians celebrate, to December 25, when Ukrainians Orthodox Christians attended services on Sunday.
In a Christmas message made public on Sunday night, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated, “All Ukrainians are together.”
“We all gather together to enjoy Christmas as one large family, nation, and cohesive country on the same day.
Christmas Eve services were performed in the Cathedral of the Nativity, adorned with fir trees and a nativity scene, in Odesa’s southern Black Sea port city. Attendees lit candles and prayed while priests dressed in gold robes conducted the service.
We firmly think that Christmas should be celebrated with everyone, not just in Moscow. In my opinion, that’s the new message,” grinned Olena, a parishioner whose son works as a front-line medic.
“We truly want to enjoy ourselves in a novel manner. We are celebrating this holiday with all of Ukraine, our independent Ukraine. We value this,” she said to AFP.
