Have you ever wondered by taking the smart route what a bright recycling bin in Dubai does? The core of Dubai’s massive recycling program, which aims to divert items from landfills for reuse or recycling, is the Smart Sustainability Oasis (SSO) initiative. The 17 containers positioned throughout the emirate provide an average of more than 8000 kg of recyclables per week, according to the Dubai Municipality (DM).
According to Saeed Abdul Rahim Safar, acting director of DM’s Waste Operations Department, “it is one of the municipality’s highly successful initiatives to advance environmental goals while exploring new ways of promoting a culture of waste segregation and recycling in collaboration with the local community.” In keeping with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, the project also assists in meeting national environmental targets.
Since the project’s inception in 2018, the community centers, which are open 24/7 and recycle eighteen various kinds of materials, including metal and electronic trash, have prevented nearly 2.5 million tonnes of rubbish from ending up in landfills.
These facilities separate waste at the source and gather recyclables to encourage social responsibility and environmental sustainability. “The primary result of these recycling stations is that they encourage waste segregation at the point of origin and lessen the quantity of waste that ends up in landfills, which will help sustain Dubai’s recycling sector,” Saeed stated.
