Vice President Kamala Harris, adopting a more assertive stance than President Joe Biden, put pressure on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday to assist in achieving a ceasefire agreement in Gaza that would lessen the suffering of Palestinian citizens. Following her in-person discussions with Netanyahu, Harris declared on television that “it is time for this war to end.”
She vowed, “I will not remain silent. We cannot allow ourselves to become numb to the suffering.” Harris claimed to have had a “frank and constructive” discussion with Netanyahu during which she reaffirmed Israel’s right to self-defence while also expressing serious concerns about the “dire” humanitarian situation in Gaza and the high death toll resulting from nine months of fighting.
Under intense scrutiny from the presumed Democratic front-runner, Harris essentially restated President Joe Biden’s long-standing assertion that an end to the bloody conflict in Gaza, where over 39,000 Palestinians have lost their lives, is urgently needed.
She did, however, strike a more forceful note regarding the urgency of the situation just one day after Netanyahu delivered a fiery speech to the US Congress in which he defended the war, declared “total victory” against Hamas, and made very little mention of ceasefire talks.
