Qatar commutes the death row sentences of former Indian Navy officers.

NEW DELHI: The Indian Ministry of External Affairs announced on Thursday that a Qatari court had mitigated the death sentences of eight former Indian Navy officers.

The men have been detained since August 2022. They work for the private security business Dahra, which trains the Qatari Emiri Naval Forces.

In October of this year, the Indian government announced that they had received a death sentence from the Court of First Instance of Qatar.

On Thursday, their sentences were reduced.

The ministry released a statement saying, “We have noted the verdict of the Court of Appeal of Qatar in the Dahra Global case, in which the sentences have been reduced.”

“The comprehensive ruling is anticipated. To determine the next course of action, we are in continuous communication with both the family members and the legal team.

The Indian ambassador to Qatar and the relatives of the former officers were present when the decision to commute the sentence was taken, according to the ministry.

The eight former military were reportedly detained last year for espionage for Israel, despite the fact that official charges have not been made public and Qatar has not yet provided any information about the arrest and sentence to the public.
