Nothing is Impossible: How UAE's Female Doctors Balance Hospital and Home Obligations

The UAE’s healthcare sector is brimming with remarkable female experts who have proven their worth amid every crises. Dr. Summia Zaher, born into a medical family in Manchester, is the current medical director at Abu Dhabi’s Danat Al Emarat Hospital for Women and Children.

As a mother of two, she negotiated the complications of being available to her children while maintaining her job by relocating to the UAE.

I felt compelled to pursue a job in a family-friendly country and provided numerous role models for my daughter to select from, regardless of the career path she picked,” said the consultant obstetrician and gynecologist with over 20 years of experience.

Dr Summia balances her professional and personal lives by involving her children in the preparation of her lectures, forging a connection between her roles as a mother and a medical leader.

Reflecting on a pivotal period in her career, she explained, “I had to make the difficult decision to return to work early from maternity leave, which meant I missed out on a lot of special family milestones.”
