A New Subscription Layer Arrives on Familiar Apps
Meta, the parent company behind WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook, has officially switched on its new Meta One subscription service for users across the UAE. The move brings a structured, tiered pricing system to apps that hundreds of millions of people already use daily, layering optional paid features on top of what the company insists will remain a fundamentally free experience for everyone.
According to Meta, the core functionality across all of its apps — along with baseline access to Meta AI — will stay free for UAE residents. The subscriptions, the company says, are designed to unlock additional, more computationally demanding features rather than gate access to essential tools people already rely on.
Strong Early Uptake
Interest in the new offering appears to have been immediate. Meta reports that more than 50 features are available at launch across Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp and Meta AI, and that the service had already recorded 15 million subscriptions and trials globally as of Tuesday, just before the UAE rollout. The company has also signalled that its Edits video app and forthcoming AI glasses will be folded into the Meta One ecosystem over time, suggesting the subscription framework is intended to eventually span its entire product lineup.
What Individual Users Get
For everyday users, Meta One builds on single-app plans launched earlier this year: Instagram Plus, Facebook Plus and WhatsApp Plus. These entry-level tiers focus on personalisation and self-expression rather than AI horsepower. Instagram Plus, priced at Dh7.99 a month, has recently added custom fonts for direct messages and Stories, notifications when specific people view a user’s Story, and message previews. Facebook Plus, also Dh7.99 monthly, brings Messenger customisation options, expanded Reels insights and broader access to “super reactions” across Reels and Feed posts.
WhatsApp Plus, the most affordable single-app option at Dh5.99 a month, focuses on organisation and personality, offering exclusive chat themes and icons, special-effect stickers, and the ability to pin a larger number of conversations. Meta has also teased upcoming additions to WhatsApp Plus, including expanded storage for chat and media backups and a new “Focus Schedules” tool that lets users automatically mute or hide chats during set periods of the day.
Bundled Plans for Power Users
For subscribers wanting broader access across Meta’s ecosystem, the company offers two bundled tiers. The Core plan, priced at Dh22.99 a month, combines the features of the three single-app plans with expanded use of AI tools like Restyle on Instagram, voice effects and increased image and video generation through Meta’s Muse-powered AI models.
The Premium tier, at Dh76.99 a month, goes further still, offering what Meta describes as the most generous access to its AI content-generation tools across its full family of apps. Notably, Meta says early testing showed more than half of bundle subscribers engaged with both the AI and self-expression features on offer, with tools like Restyle and Instagram’s voice effects cited among the top reasons people chose to subscribe in the first place.
Tools Built for Creators and Businesses
Beyond individual consumers, Meta One also targets creators and small businesses looking to build an audience or manage customer relationships directly within apps they already use daily. The Essential plan, starting at Dh46.99 a month, offers tools to help users establish credibility with new audiences, including verified badges, impersonation protection and expanded access to Meta Business Agent for round-the-clock customer responses on WhatsApp.
Moving up the tier structure, the Advanced plan starts at Dh119 a month and adds features aimed at more serious publishers and businesses, including the ability to schedule posts up to 30 days in advance, exportable analytics, deeper audience insight tools, and the ability to grant team members account access without sharing passwords.
At the top end, the Expert plan starts at Dh359 a month, while the Max tier begins at Dh1,199 monthly, aimed squarely at teams and businesses managing accounts and customer interactions at significant scale, offering the highest levels of feature access and Meta Business Agent capacity available.
An Upcoming Boost for Creators
Meta has also confirmed that an “Edits Plus” plan will soon join the Meta One lineup specifically for video creators, adding extra cloud storage for syncing projects across multiple devices, along with expanded access to an upcoming Edits assistant designed to help creators analyse their Instagram performance data and brainstorm new content ideas.
What It Means for UAE Users
For the UAE’s large and highly active social media user base, Meta One represents a notable shift in how the company plans to monetise its platforms going forward, moving beyond advertising alone toward a hybrid model that blends free access with premium, subscription-gated capabilities. Whether UAE users embrace the paid tiers at the same pace seen globally remains to be seen, but early global uptake suggests the appetite for enhanced AI and creator tools may be stronger than many expected.
