A crucial climate summit that started with world leaders admitting that the planet is in crisis is scheduled for a second day of statements by Leaders at COP28 Saturday, which the organizers hope would pave the way for significant action in the days ahead.
Presidents, prime ministers, and royals dominated Friday’s COP28, the annual United Nations meeting, as they outlined their plans to cut back on heat-trapping emissions and urged one another to work together to prevent the climate catastrophe that seems to be approaching faster than ever in 2023.
Around 150 of the world’s most influential decision-makers attended the inaugural addresses, which continued into Saturday. By then, approximately 60 countries had spoken before the main sessions of the conference, which will go until December 12, started.
The leaders of the top two polluting countries, US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping, are not present at the conference. Biden was scheduled to be replaced by Vice President Kamala Harris on Saturday.
With Harris’s presence at COP28 in Dubai, the US delegation will be led by a vice president for the first time since COP3 in Kyoto, Japan. Vice President Al Gore delivered a speech during COP3 in 1997. Lower-level COP summit interventions occurred during President George W. Bush’s administration.
