It was only a fantasy a few decades ago for Mohammed Haneef Puttur, an Indian exile living in the UAE, to teach computer science to rural students. Curious about how his dream was realized? A nontraditional classroom without walls serves as a subtle clue.
Puttur launched a bus carrying 17 laptops in isolated parts of Karnataka, India, to achieve his longtime dream.
Puttur, from the village of Aryapu, was inspired by his experience with academic barriers. Even after graduating from Malnad College of Engineering in 1999 with a degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering, he still lacked a good foundation in computer literacy. “I didn’t learn to use a computer until I finished my engineering degree. Puttur stated, “I didn’t even touch a computer in college.
Puttur launched the “Class on Wheels” initiative to give rural kids access to primary computer education because he was determined to ensure others didn’t have to overcome the same obstacles.
Mohammed Haneef is now the cloud and infrastructure manager at the Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre Lab at the University of Dubai.
The genesis of this endeavor dates back to 2018 when Puttur took advantage of Big Ticket’s “Make a Wish Come True” campaign, an Abu Dhabi prize draw. “After registering, my goal was fulfilled. I used the money I earned to start the project,” Puttur stated.
