An Egyptian proposal to resolve their acrimonious conflict was met with chilly public greetings on Monday by Israel and Hamas. Although they did not completely reject the plan, the two did not rule out further diplomatic attempts to avert an increasingly destructive Israel offensive in the Gaza Strip.
According to top Egyptian officials and a European diplomat acquainted with the proposal, the Egyptian plan asks for a progressive release of hostages and the establishment of a Palestinian government composed of specialists to oversee the Gaza Strip and the occupied West Bank.
Speaking about the idea under anonymity, the Egyptian official stated that the specifics were negotiated with the Gulf state of Qatar and submitted to the governments of Israel, Hamas, the US, and Europe. Although the US is Israel’s closest friend and a major player in the region, Egypt and Qatar also act as mediators between Israel and Hamas.
Benjamin Netanyahu, the prime minister of Israel, refrained from addressing the notion explicitly. Speaking to his Likud Party colleagues, however, he declared that he was committed to carrying out Israel’s offensive.
He declared, “We are going to be expanding the fight in the coming days. This will be a long battle, and it isn’t finished.”
