International Workshop on UN Police Commanders’ Performance: Abu Dhabi is getting ready to host an influential international workshop that focuses on optimizing the role of United Nations police commanders in peacekeeping missions. The event will happen from 4th September to 17th September 2023. It’s the second consecutive year when the UAE’s Ministry of the Interior is organizing such a big gathering. A lineup of really knowledgeable speakers, including folks from the UN and top experts in peacekeeping, will be there to share what they know.

So why should we in the UAE care about this workshop? Well, UAE wants to strengthen its bonds with other countries. Our world can be at peace if everyone steps up in such decisions and helps each other globally.

The workshop will talk about how the environment is changing for UN peacekeepers and what that means for their work. They’ll also get into how we can set up ways to measure how well peacekeepers are doing their jobs. Furthermore, they will throw light on the challenges that peacekeepers face such as keeping up with the new technologies and lack of opportunities.

Alexander Zuev serves as the UN Assistant Secretary-General for Rule of Law and Security Institutions. He was impressed with UAE’s efforts. He put it like this:  “The second United Nations Police Commanders Workshop on Performance is an excellent opportunity for Heads of United Nations Police Components and United Nations Seniors to jointly consider the Secretary-General’s Quintet for Change through the United Nations Police lens. It aims at identifying options to utilize existing-, obtain or upskill personnel on specialized policing capabilities required in changing operating environments, as well as in the areas of data, innovation, strategic foresight, behavioral science, and – most importantly – results. The United Nations is grateful for the Government of the United Arab Emirates in hosting this important workshop.”

Adding to this, United Nations Police Adviser Faisal Shahkar mentioned, “Enhancing the performance of UN Police is central to the Secretary-General’s Action for Peacekeeping initiative. This workshop will help in reinforcing the UN Police’s role in the organization’s performance management framework.”

The UAE’s involvement does not end here; it will also support the United Nations Chiefs of Police Summit scheduled for next year.

This workshop is very important as it shows how committed UAE is when it comes to maintaining global peace.
