A disagreement over the import of hunting trophies led to the Botswanan President, Mokgweetsi Masisi, threatening to transfer 20,000 elephants to Germany.
According to Mokgweetsi Masisi, Germans ought to “live together with the animals, in the way you are trying to tell us to,” as she stated to the journal Bild.
Masisi, whose nation has seen an increase in elephant population to almost 130,000, declared, “This is not a joke.”
Masisi declared, “We would like to offer such a gift to Germany,” and he would “not take no for an answer.” The African leader contended that hunting is a crucial tool for controlling elephant populations, as their numbers have skyrocketed due to conservation initiatives.
He told the German paper that the elephant herds were trampling people, consuming crops, and causing property damage.
Because of worries over poaching, Germany’s environment minister suggested earlier this year that stronger restrictions on the entry of hunting trophies should be implemented. Masisi asserted that restricting the importation of hunting trophies will only cause poverty among Botswanans.
Botswana banned trophy hunting in 2014 but lifted the restrictions in 2019 under pressure from local communities. The country now issues annual hunting quotas.
