A day after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and left the nation due to a violent crackdown on a student-led uprising, the president of Bangladesh dissolved parliament on Tuesday, allowing for the formation of an interim government.
According to a statement from President Mohammed Shahabuddin’s office, Hasina’s fiercest adversary, former prime minister and head of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Begum Khaleda Zia, has been released from house arrest.
If parliament was not dissolved, student protestors had threatened to hold additional demonstrations. According to the presidential statement, the decision was made after discussions with the heads of the armed forces, political party leaders, student leaders, and some civil society representatives.
Hasina’s 15-year second term in office ended on Monday with her flight. Having inherited the political movement of her father, state founder Mujubur Rahman, who was assassinated in 1975, she had ruled the nation for 20 of the previous 30 years.
General Waker-Uz-Zaman, the head of Bangladesh’s army, was scheduled to speak with student leaders about establishing a transitional administration that will likely conduct elections shortly after assuming power. On Monday, Zaman declared Hasina’s resignation. After travelling by plane to India, Hasina is staying at a safe house outside of New Delhi.
