Finding lost Sharks, Saving Turtles: This Resident leads UAE’s Biggest Environmental Charity

Arabella Willing devotes her entire weekend to protecting Turtles the natural ecosystem of the United Arab Emirates, when many locals spend their weekends at brunch or the beach.

She can teach volunteers how to construct traditional irrigation channels, recognize signs of turtle nests, plant native trees, or even keep an eye on wild cats throughout a typical weekend. She leads her team at Emirates Nature – WWF, the largest environmental charity in the United Arab Emirates, overseeing dozens of volunteer programs and events each month throughout the nation as Head of Conservation Outreach and Citizen Science.

These include the paid membership Leaders of Change, which allows participants to engage in master workshops, field work, and one-on-one interactions with scientists, and the free youth program Connect with Nature, organized in collaboration with the Environment Agency, Abu Dhabi.

Willing is also the national leader of several other focused efforts. She was involved in the beginning of the Notice Nature program for Mashreq consumers, and more recently, she spearheaded a campaign with the Fujairah Environmental Authority to employ community power to monitor the emirate’s unique wildlife, including the increasingly uncommon Arabian Caracal lynx.
