Emirates astronomer requests a fatwa on astrophotography after observing the crescent moon.

A well-known Emirates astronomer  in the United Arab Emirates has suggested issuing a fatwa, or Islamic decree, on astrophotography. This suggestion has the potential to change the way that the conventional technique of establishing the start of a new lunar month is done, provided that the Islamic world accepts it. Nowadays, the general consensus is that the crescent moon signifies the start of a new month when it can be seen with the naked eye.

The fatwa was proposed by Mohammad Shawkat Odeh, the director of the International Astronomy Center in Abu Dhabi, during his speech at the UAE Council for Fatwa’s second international conference, which got underway in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday.

We really need a gathering like this to share knowledge,” Odeh remarked. Since 2006, astronomy has been a thing. Now, we urge the Islamic community to give it serious thought and issue a fatwa.

Technology that makes it easier to see and photograph the crescent moon is called astrophotography.

Asserting that misinformation has tarnished the technology, Odeh provided a thorough description of astrophotography’s operation. He clarified that in order to capture a sharp image of the crescent moon, the photography technique employs a number of instruments, such as an astronomy camera, filters, and a computer.
