A new social contract for education, how it will help?

Large-scale transformation and innovative approaches are feasible within the realm of education. Through collective acts of courage, leadership, resistance, creativity, and care, we can establish a new social contract. This new agreement must overcome discrimination, marginalization, and exclusion, and ensure gender parity and equal rights regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, disability, sexual orientation, age, or citizenship status. A comprehensive commitment to social dialogue is essential to bring about this new contract. Together, we can create a more inclusive and equitable educational landscape.

The international community has a pivotal role in facilitating the alignment of states and non-state actors around shared purposes, norms, and standards necessary to establish a new social contract for education. It is imperative to extend support for the educational needs of asylum seekers, refugees, stateless persons, and migrants, mainly through international cooperation and the work of global institutions.

The education of these groups is a significant challenge, given their unique circumstances and vulnerabilities. The international community must work together to address these challenges, providing them with access to quality education aligned with their needs and aspirations. This effort requires the participation of all stakeholders, including governments, civil society, the private sector, and other relevant actors.

In conclusion, the international community must take concerted and collaborative action to support the educational needs of vulnerable groups, such as refugees, asylum seekers, stateless persons, and migrants. By doing so, we can help to realize a new social contract for education built on shared purposes, norms, and standards and contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

Pedagogies of cooperation and solidarity – Principles for dialogue and action

“Pedagogies of cooperation and solidarity” refers to teaching methods prioritizing collaborative and supportive learning environments. These principles serve as a guide for both constructive dialogue and practical steps towards achieving shared goals. The essence of this approach lies in recognizing that education is not a solitary endeavour but a collective one. This requires a fundamental shift from individualistic learning to a more collaborative and cooperative approach. By fostering an environment that values cooperation and solidarity, teachers can help students develop the critical skills to engage in constructive dialogue and work collaboratively towards common goals. In this way, Pedagogies of cooperation and solidarity are potent tools for promoting inclusive and transformative learning experiences.

Interconnectedness and interdependencies should frame pedagogy.

The principles of interconnectedness and interdependency should underpin pedagogy development. These concepts emphasize the importance of recognizing the complex ways various factors interact. Educators can create a more holistic and comprehensive learning environment that promotes critical thinking and problem-solving skills by incorporating this framework into pedagogical practices. Acknowledging the interconnectedness and interdependencies of various factors is imperative to achieve a more effective pedagogical approach.

The pedagogical relationships between educators, learners, and knowledge are within a broader societal framework. All learners are intricately connected to the world, and all learning occurs in conjunction with the world. To that end, students must internalize how their actions impact others and vice versa. Therefore, academic institutions and classrooms must strive to foster cross-cultural interaction and engagement. This will enable students to cultivate a deeper appreciation for diverse perspectives and practices and develop the skills to engage with individuals from various backgrounds and cultures.

Cooperation and collaboration must be taught and practised appropriately at different levels and ages.

Acquiring and applying cooperation and collaboration skills is pivotal to fostering a cohesive and high-performing team in a business or academic setting. It becomes imperative, therefore, to teach and practice these skills appropriately across different levels and age groups.

Education plays a vital role in enhancing individuals’ capabilities to collaborate and bring about meaningful transformations at both personal and societal levels. The significance of cooperation and collaboration in learning communities is undeniable, regardless of age, whether in early childhood or adult education. These defining characteristics of effective learning communities help learners develop the critical skills and knowledge required to work with diverse groups of individuals and bring about collective growth and progress.

Solidarity, compassion, ethics, and empathy should be ingrained in learning.

Integrating solidarity, compassion, ethics, and empathy into the learning process is crucial for fostering a values-based approach to education. By prioritizing these values, learners are better equipped to navigate complex ethical challenges and cultivate a more holistic understanding of their societal role. Therefore, educators and institutions must take a proactive approach to infusing these values throughout the learning experience.

We must embrace the complete range of cultural resources available to humanity and incorporate them into education. It is not enough to value diversity and pluralism; we must actively support and sustain them. To foster solidarity, pedagogy must eliminate prejudice, bias, and divisiveness. The ability to empathize – to attentively listen and relate to others – is a critical aspect of developing a pedagogy of solidarity.

Assessment should be aligned to these aims and be meaningful for student growth and learning.

Assessment should be designed to align with the specific learning objectives and provide meaningful insights for student growth and progress. Ensuring that the assessment process is a valuable tool for enhancing student learning is imperative. The alignment of assessment with learning objectives helps keep students focused on the intended outcomes and provides educators with a precise framework for evaluating student progress. By utilizing effective assessment strategies, educators can provide students with the support they need to achieve their goals and reach their full potential.

Assessment instruments such as exams and tests must align with educational purposes and intents. Notably, a significant amount of valuable learning is not easily measured or quantified. Teacher-driven formative assessments that promote student learning should be prioritised, as they enhance the educational experience. To achieve this, it is necessary to reduce the importance of competitive, high stakes standardized assessment.
