We recently had the privilege of interviewing Scott Malcolm, Director of Clarien Solutions LLC. He is a professional line manager of Electrical, Instrumentation, Automation, and Construction Services. In his positions in different workplaces, he has exceeded expectations by building high-performing teams to consistently deliver top-notch customer-focused work. Also, over these years, he has developed expertise in the management and running of a business. Besides that, he is always open to associating with new opportunities to improve himself and his work. Let’s learn more about Scott Malcolm and his journey through this interview below.

Start Of The Journey

We started the interview by asking, “Which career path led you to where you are today?”

Scott Malcolm shared, “That is a hard question, I have always worked with controls and control systems, and throughout the years my roles evolved from maintaining, operating, programming, design, and leadership.”

Major Inspiration Behind Building The Brand

To learn more about the factors that inspired Scott to develop his company. We asked, “What inspired you to develop the idea of your company?”

Scott Malcolm replied, “When Stacy and I saw the opportunity to represent some great technology solutions in the region we had to take the plunge. The opportunity in the Region along with the leadership and collective drive of the regional governments on the direction and the prominence they want to play in being technological leaders. It seemed like the perfect storm to bring some proven technology that is new to this market into a region poised to grow and expand those technologies and their uses.”

Evolving Priorities

Businesses may tend to evolve their priorities as per the changing market requirements. We asked, “How have your priorities in terms of business evolved since you first started?”

Scott shared, “My Priorities in business have always been the same, bringing fair honest value to Customers, Clients, Employees, and Vendors. This model has always served us well in all of our businesses. The biggest evolution has been the use of technology in business, we have always tried to be leading the use of technology.  When we started our second business in 2005 we went digital first, the last resort was to print it on paper.  It still surprises me today how far ahead we were. Many businesses today are not where we were almost 20 years ago.”

Overcoming Challenges

Every business goes through specific challenges and tough times, and overcoming them effectively reflects authentic leadership. We asked, “What are the most challenging situations that your company overcomes?”

Scott Malcolm replied, “That is an interesting question. We provide solutions for most company’s pain points in their business.  We have yet to back away from a challenge, we tend to find the solution either with the products we represent, or we will find one that will solve the problem.  It is what we do.”

“What’s the key strength to overcome it?”

Scott shared, “Research and a great business network.  Someone has had the problem before, your network can and is your lifeline when solving problems.”

Stand-Out Factors

To stand out amidst the crowd in the industry, businesses need to focus on building certain unique features. We asked, “What makes your company stand out from all the other businesses in your industry?”

Scott Malcolm shared, “I think we represent the best in the business. So far I haven’t found a problem that our products can’t solve if we do run into something that we haven’t solved before. We just bring that solution into the product family.”

KPIs For Measuring Business Success

“What KPIs do you use to measure your business success?”

Scott Malcolm replied, “Satisfied customers, user growth, community engagement. Our flagship product is Inductive Automation’s Ignition software. Inductive Automation has done a fabulous job of creating a community of users who all work together to help each other solve problems, make the product better, and share resources and knowledge. With free training for users, free software for universities and schools, as well as home users. Inductive has laid out a great foundation for us as Authorized Distributors to grow a local user community and add to the worldwide community as well.”

We were intrigued to learn more about the current services offered by Scott’s company. So we asked, “Tell us something about your services. What are you working on now?”

Scott Malcolm shared, “We provide industry-leading Software and Hardware solutions for Industry Automation and Digital Transformation. Our products are used by more than 50% of the Fortune 500 companies and Ignition Software is the fastest growing Industrial Automation Software in the world.”

Effective Teamwork, we asked Scott Malcolm

Having a strong team is a prerequisite for building a successful business. We asked, “How do you build trust with your employees and boost productivity without causing burnout?”

Scott Malcolm shared, “Flexible result-driven metrics, as long as your goals are met, and your customers served, flexibility is key. Whether you work from home, the office, or a coffee shop it doesn’t matter how or where you are working.”

Adapting To The Latest Technologies

Another major factor that adds to business growth is adapting to the latest trends and technologies in the industry. We asked, “How do you stay on top of new technologies and trends in your industry?”

Scott Malcolm replied, “Networking, industry involvement, hands-on testing and trials of new technology, staying in touch with our solution providers, being involved in their beta testing, and working with them to find new solutions to existing problems. We try to be leading trends rather than following.”

Advice To Beginners

“What advice would you give to starting entrepreneurs?”

Scott Malcolm shared, “Bring passion to what you do, and don’t be afraid to break out of the “normal”
