Dubai prohibits e-scooters in the metro and tram: After a late-night announcement, residents were unprepared.

Users of electric scooters were taken entirely by surprise when they learned that as of today, March 1, electric scooters are no longer permitted within Dubai Metro and Tram. Some chose to return home, while others were forced to park their e-scooters outside Metro stations.

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) announced the decision via Twitter on Thursday, February 29. The message read, “Starting Friday, March 1, the use of e-scooters inside Dubai Metro and Dubai Tram will be prohibited to ensure your safety and that of others.” ‘Your safety our focus’ was another hashtag that RTA utilized.

Surprised by the announcement, residents like Sajid and Sam—who have been using e-scooters as their last-mile mobility solution—had carried their portable ride on Friday morning.

My monthly average for public transportation is usually Dh350, which includes unrestricted access to Dubai Metro. I ride my e-scooter to and from work and the metro every day next, from the office to the Metro and back home. I believe I will have to spend about Dh100 a day on taxi rides now that I work as a freelancer and travel to many locations,” he continued.
