Oman Unveils Plans for 400-Km Hydrogen Pipeline to Boost Green Energy Leadership

Oman has taken a major step in its clean energy strategy by announcing plans to construct a 400-kilometre hydrogen pipeline network. This ambitious infrastructure project, revealed by Eng. Mohsin bin Hamad al Hadhrami, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Energy and Minerals, is designed to link major green hydrogen production facilities to industrial hubs and export terminals, cementing the Sultanate’s role in the global energy transition.

A Strategic Backbone for a Hydrogen Economy

The planned pipeline is far more than just a piece of infrastructure; it is a strategic pillar for Oman’s future energy security and economic diversification. It will efficiently transport green hydrogen—produced using renewable energy sources like solar and wind—from production centers in areas such as Al Duqm and Salalah to key domestic industries and ports for international export.

State-owned OQ Gas Networks (OQGN) will spearhead the development, which also includes plans for carbon dioxide pipelines as part of a broader Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) strategy. This integrated approach positions hydrogen as a cornerstone of Oman’s plan to decarbonize hard-to-abate sectors like heavy industry and transport.

Connecting Production to Global Demand

The pipeline is critical to unlocking Oman’s hydrogen export potential. By connecting large-scale production sites to export nodes, it will enable the Sultanate to supply global markets with clean fuel. This move aligns with growing international demand for green hydrogen, particularly from Europe and Asia.

Domestically, the network will supply industries transitioning to cleaner energy, supporting Oman’s net-zero by 2050 and Vision 2040 goals. Reports indicate that 300–400 km of hydrogen pipelines could be operational by 2030, forming the backbone of a national hydrogen ecosystem.

Driving Economic Diversification and Regional Cooperation

This major investment is expected to stimulate significant economic benefits, including job creation, technology transfer, and foreign investment in engineering and construction. It marks a decisive shift away from reliance on traditional oil and gas revenues toward a sustainable, knowledge-based economy.

Furthermore, the project enhances regional energy integration within the GCC. By strengthening interconnections in electricity, gas, and hydrogen, Oman aims to improve energy security, operational efficiency, and open avenues to supply surplus clean energy to neighboring markets.

A Holistic National Strategy

The pipeline announcement is part of a suite of hydrogen initiatives. Oman is advancing multiple production projects through international partnerships and developing hydrogen refuelling stations for mobility. This comprehensive approach—from production and transport to domestic use and export—signals Oman’s commitment to building a complete, competitive hydrogen value chain.

As nations worldwide race to secure their clean energy futures, Oman’s 400-km hydrogen pipeline is a bold declaration of intent. It underscores the Sultanate’s ambition to not only participate in the global hydrogen economy but to become one of its leading producers and exporters, transforming its energy landscape for decades to come.
