Algeria Formally Breaks Off Relations With the UAE
A decades-long relationship between two prominent Arab nations has come to an abrupt halt. Algeria announced this week that it is severing diplomatic ties with the United Arab Emirates, marking one of the most significant ruptures in Gulf–North Africa relations in recent memory.
The decision was delivered through Algerian state media, with the country’s foreign ministry stating that a pattern of what it called provocative and hostile conduct by Abu Dhabi had left Algiers with no alternative. Officials said repeated attempts to caution the UAE through diplomatic channels had gone unheeded, and that every available avenue for preserving the relationship had ultimately been exhausted.
As part of the announcement, the UAE’s ambassador to Algeria was summoned to the foreign ministry and formally notified of the decision. He was given 48 hours to leave the country, a swift and unusually blunt move even by the standards of Gulf diplomatic disputes.
A Relationship Strained for Years
While Algeria’s statement did not spell out a single triggering incident, analysts point to a string of long-running disagreements between the two governments. Chief among them is the Western Sahara dispute, where the UAE has firmly backed Morocco’s claims over the contested territory, even establishing a consulate there. Algeria, by contrast, has long supported the Polisario Front’s push for independence in the region, putting the two nations on opposite sides of one of the Arab world’s most sensitive territorial disputes.
The two countries have also diverged sharply on the question of normalising relations with Israel. The UAE became one of the first Gulf states to establish formal ties with Israel through the 2020 Abraham Accords, a move Algeria has consistently opposed. Algiers has additionally accused the UAE of interference in its domestic affairs, including allegations that Abu Dhabi has offered support to separatist movements within Algeria — claims the UAE has not addressed directly.
Tensions had been building well before this week’s announcement. Earlier this year, Algeria began unwinding a longstanding air services agreement with the UAE that dated back over a decade, a sign that the relationship was already deteriorating steadily rather than collapsing overnight.
Airspace Closure Adds to the Fallout
Compounding the diplomatic break, Algeria’s Defence Ministry confirmed that the country’s airspace would be closed to all UAE-registered civilian and military aircraft, both for arrivals and departures. The restriction came into effect at midnight local time. Notably, an exception has been carved out for scheduled commercial flights to Algiers’ Houari Boumediene International Airport, which will be permitted to continue operating until an existing contractual agreement lapses at the end of the year.
The scale of the airspace measure underscores how far the relationship has deteriorated, moving beyond symbolic diplomatic gestures into concrete operational restrictions that will directly affect trade, travel and logistics between the two nations.
UAE Responds With Calls for Clarity
The UAE’s reaction has been measured but pointed. Anwar Gargash, a senior diplomatic adviser to the UAE president, posted publicly that diplomatic relationships should be grounded in rational dialogue, open communication and a clear understanding of mutual interests, rather than ambiguity or unspoken signals that require interpretation. He did not name Algeria directly, but the timing left little doubt about the intended audience.
Separately, the UAE’s Foreign Ministry issued a statement expressing hope that the diplomatic freeze would prove to be temporary. The ministry reiterated its regard for the Algerian people and voiced a preference for eventually restoring the relationship on more stable footing.
What This Means for the Region
The rupture between Algeria and the UAE is being closely watched across North Africa and the Gulf, given both countries’ influence within their respective regional blocs. Algeria remains a major player in the Maghreb and a vocal advocate for Polisario-aligned positions, while the UAE has steadily expanded its economic and diplomatic footprint across Africa in recent years, including investments and trade partnerships that touch on Algeria’s neighbours.
Regional observers note that the breakdown also reflects broader competition for influence in the Sahel, where Gulf states, including the UAE, have taken a more active role in recent years — activity that Algeria has repeatedly characterised as destabilising to the wider region.
For now, both governments appear to be settling into a period of formal estrangement, with the practical effects — from stalled trade discussions to disrupted air links — likely to unfold in the weeks ahead. Whether the rift proves to be a temporary diplomatic freeze or a longer-term realignment of alliances across North Africa and the Gulf remains to be seen.
