A Vessel off Yemen's Aden Reports Explosions at Sea

Authorities reported Friday that a suspected attack by Yemen’s Houthi rebels resulted in explosions ahead of a vessel in the Gulf of Aden.

No one was injured on the ship, which proceeded on its route, according to the British military’s United Kingdom Maritime Operations Center, which monitors the Middle East’s waterways. Ambrey, a private security firm, also reported the attack.

The Houthis did not immediately take responsibility for the attack. A statement from Houthi military spokesperson Brig. Gen. Yahya Saree was postponed Friday night due to “urgent military developments in the theater of military operations,” according to the rebel-controlled SABA news agency. He was expected to speak on Saturday.

Friday’s explosions occurred after a Houthi missile damaged a commercial ship in the Gulf of Aden on Wednesday, killing three crew members and forcing survivors to flee the vessel.

It was the first lethal blow in the Iranian-backed group’s campaign against Israel’s war on Hamas in the Gaza Strip. The Houthis characterize their attacks as an attempt to put pressure on Israel to end the war, but their targets are increasingly unrelated to the fight.

Other recent Houthi activities include an attack in February on the Rubymar, a fertilizer-carrying cargo ship that sank on Saturday after drifting for many days, and the downing of a US drone worth tens of millions of dollars.
