A global gathering of artists, researchers and technologists is about to turn Dubai into a showcase for digital creativity.
The 31st International Symposium on Electronic Art, known as ISEA2026, opens in Dubai on November 6. It runs from November 6 to 15, with exhibitions across the city and an online academic programme.
What is on the programme
The scale is considerable. The conference includes 145 academic papers, 40 discussion sessions and 20 workshops. They address artificial intelligence, identity, memory and environmental sustainability through the lens of digital art.
The symposium is organised in two parts. The online academic programme runs from November 10 to 14, with talks, panel discussions, workshops and eco labs held fully online. The live artistic programme, from November 6 to 15, offers exhibitions, installations and performances in person at venues across Dubai. That means researchers abroad can join the discussions without travelling, while visitors in the UAE can see the work for themselves.
The theme: ELYAH
The theme is ELYAH: Constellating Place, Data & Identity. Organisers describe Dubai as a city of accelerated innovation, where desert meets data, and where art gives form to abstraction, emotion to data and a human perspective to systems.
Work will span installation, performance, moving image, sound, code and other emerging media. The programme also includes strands on ecological futures, digital geographies and the treatment of memory in a data-driven age.
Why it was moved
The event was originally planned for the spring. The organisers decided, after consulting partners, to reschedule it from April 10–19 to November 6–15. Organisers have not given a reason in the material available for this report.
Dubai’s role
The symposium is being hosted by Dubai Culture, and Shaima Rashed Al Suwaidi is CEO of the Arts, Design and Literature Sector. The emirate has made a point of positioning itself as a centre for creative industries. Events like ISEA give it a stage for that ambition, and they bring a specialist international audience that might not otherwise visit.
ISEA has been held in cities around the world since its first edition, and each host adds its own cultural context. Dubai’s mix of technology, finance and cultural institutions makes it a natural setting for a discussion about data and identity.
Why electronic art matters now
Debates about artificial intelligence have reached galleries and studios, as well as laboratories. Artists are using algorithms to make work, and questioning what those same systems mean for authorship, privacy and cultural memory. The symposium’s academic papers and workshops give those arguments a structured forum.
For residents, the symposium also offers a low-barrier introduction to contemporary art. Many installations and performances are designed to be experienced rather than explained.
How to take part
Registration and venue details are available through the organisers. Visitors planning to attend the live programme should check the schedule, since some events may require tickets or advance registration. Those interested in the academic sessions can follow the online stream.
If the programme lives up to its billing, ISEA2026 will leave Dubai with a new set of public artworks, new research collaborations and a stronger link to the global community of electronic artists.
