Dubai’s First National Rail Station Nears Completion Ahead of September 30 Launch
Dubai is about to gain something it has never had before: a station on the UAE’s national intercity railway. Etihad Rail’s Al Yalayis Station, located near the Jumeirah Golf Estates community in southern Dubai, is scheduled to begin passenger operations on September 30, 2026, marking a significant expansion of the country’s growing passenger rail network and giving Dubai residents a direct rail link to Abu Dhabi for the first time.
The station will open simultaneously with Al Dhaid Station in Sharjah, together representing the second major phase of Etihad Rail’s passenger network rollout, following the launch of the network’s first passenger route between Abu Dhabi and Fujairah on June 30.
A New Way to Travel Between the Emirates
Once operational, the Al Yalayis Station will connect to Abu Dhabi’s Mohamed bin Zayed City station, with the journey between the two emirates expected to take approximately 57 minutes, a travel time that compares favourably with the typical road journey along Sheikh Zayed Road, particularly during peak traffic periods. For residents who regularly commute or travel between Dubai and Abu Dhabi for work, family or leisure, the new rail option offers a potentially faster, more predictable alternative to driving.
The station’s location has been carefully chosen for accessibility. Situated along Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road, one of Dubai’s major north-south highways, Al Yalayis sits close to a number of established and rapidly growing residential communities in southern Dubai. A footbridge connection to the existing Dubai Metro Red Line, at the nearby Jumeirah Golf Estates Metro station, is expected to allow passengers to move seamlessly between the national rail network and the city’s existing public transport system.
Momentum From an Already Successful Launch
The Dubai station’s opening builds on early momentum generated by Etihad Rail’s first passenger route. Since launching services between Abu Dhabi’s Mohamed bin Zayed City and Fujairah’s Al Hilal City on June 30, the operator has already sold more than 70,000 passenger tickets, a figure that officials have pointed to as clear evidence that intercity rail travel is beginning to establish itself as a genuine option for UAE residents, rather than a niche or novelty service.
That existing route currently runs non-stop between the two cities in roughly one hour and 45 minutes, with launch pricing offering a 50 percent discount off eventual standard fares, an incentive that has likely contributed to the strong early uptake. Whether similar promotional pricing will apply to the new Dubai and Sharjah routes has not yet been formally confirmed, though industry observers expect Etihad Rail to maintain a comparable pricing strategy to encourage early adoption on the new stretches of the network.
A Phased National Rollout
The Dubai and Sharjah station openings represent just one phase in a broader, carefully staged rollout of the UAE’s national passenger rail network. According to Etihad Rail’s published timeline, the network’s next expansion phase will bring stations to the Al Dhafra region, with Madinat Zayed and Liwa scheduled to open on November 30, followed by the remaining Al Dhafra station on December 30. A further station in Sharjah, at University City, is planned to complete the first phase of the passenger network by March 30, 2027.
Once fully built out, Etihad Rail’s passenger network is designed to connect 11 cities and key areas across the UAE, with trains capable of travelling at speeds of up to 200 kilometres per hour and carrying approximately 400 passengers per service. The scale of the ambition reflects a broader national strategy to reduce reliance on road travel between emirates, an objective with implications for traffic congestion, transport emissions and overall connectivity across the country.

Beyond its direct transport benefits, the opening of a national rail station in southern Dubai carries potential implications for property values and development patterns in the surrounding area.
