UAE Retail Investors Get a New Direct Line Into Local Stock Markets

Dubai-based fintech platform baraka has opened direct access to two of the UAE’s main stock exchanges, announcing that eligible customers can now invest in companies listed on the Dubai Financial Market (DFM) and Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange (ADX) directly through its mobile app. The launch marks a notable expansion for a platform that built its early reputation primarily around international securities, and it arrives at a moment when both of the UAE’s domestic exchanges are posting some of their strongest growth figures in years.

Baraka, which is regulated by the Dubai Financial Services Authority and based in the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC), said customers from more than 100 nationalities using the platform will now be able to fund local investments directly in UAE dirhams — removing a currency conversion step that has historically added friction for international users looking to invest in Gulf-listed companies.

Why the Timing Makes Sense

The launch comes against a backdrop of genuinely robust activity on both of the UAE’s domestic exchanges. DFM ended June 2026 with a market capitalisation of Dh981.6 billion, after total traded value rose 40.4 percent year-on-year to Dh119.5 billion during the first half of the year, with average daily traded value exceeding Dh1 billion. The exchange added 42,864 new investors during the same period, and international investors accounted for a striking 71.4 percent of those new registrations — a figure that speaks directly to the kind of global investor base platforms like baraka are specifically designed to serve.

ADX has posted comparably strong numbers, closing June 2026 with a market capitalisation of Dh2.8 trillion, alongside first-half trading value of Dh171 billion and total trading volume of 50.3 billion shares. The exchange added more than 30,000 new investors during the period, with 77 percent of those new registrations coming from foreign investors — again underscoring how much of the current growth in UAE capital markets is being driven by international rather than purely domestic participation.

Part of a Bigger Push to Deepen UAE Capital Markets

Baraka’s expansion into local market access isn’t happening in isolation. It fits within a broader, deliberate effort by UAE authorities to deepen capital formation and expand investor participation across the country’s listed markets. Dubai’s Financial Sector Strategy specifically includes initiatives designed to encourage more family businesses and start-ups to pursue public listings, while Abu Dhabi has established a Dh5 billion IPO Fund aimed at supporting private-sector companies through the listing process and further deepening the exchange’s investor base.

For a platform like baraka, positioning itself as an accessible entry point into these growing markets makes clear commercial sense. More than 70 percent of the platform’s existing user base is under the age of 35, according to the company — a demographic profile that aligns closely with the kind of younger, internationally mobile professional population that has become increasingly central to the UAE’s economic growth story over the past several years.

What This Means for Everyday Investors

Practically speaking, the launch removes a meaningful barrier for baraka’s existing international user base, who previously would have needed to use separate brokerage relationships or platforms specifically to access DFM- and ADX-listed companies. By consolidating both local and international investing within a single app, baraka is positioning itself within an increasingly crowded UAE fintech landscape where convenience and breadth of market access have become key competitive differentiators.

The move also reflects a broader trend across the UAE’s fintech sector, where platforms are increasingly racing to offer comprehensive, one-stop investment experiences spanning multiple asset classes, currencies and geographies — a shift that ultimately benefits UAE-based investors by lowering the friction historically associated with diversifying a portfolio across both local and international markets from a single, regulated platform.
