Abu Dhabi Launches MENA’s First Commercial Fully Driverless Taxis

ABU DHABI, UAE – In a historic leap for smart mobility, the Emirate of Abu Dhabi has officially launched the MENA region’s first commercial fully driverless vehicle service. This landmark initiative, featuring Level 4 autonomous vehicles operating without a safety driver, transitions self-driving technology from pilot testing to a revenue-generating public service, positioning Abu Dhabi as a global leader in future transport.

The commercial deployment is overseen by the Integrated Transport Centre (ITC) and the Smart and Autonomous Systems Council, following a rigorous testing and regulatory approval process to ensure safety and performance in Abu Dhabi’s urban environment.

Pioneering Operators and Vehicles

The ITC has issued the first two commercial permits to a pair of international consortia, blending global tech expertise with local knowledge:

  1. WeRide: In partnership with ride-hailing giant Uber and the local firm Tawasul.

  2. AutoGo-K2: Collaborating with ApolloGo, the autonomous driving arm of Chinese tech leader Baidu.

These permits authorize the operation of fully driverless fleets—with no human behind the wheel—on designated public roads, allowing residents and visitors to hail rides in truly autonomous vehicles.

A Foundation of Safety and Real-Time Oversight

A cornerstone of this commercial launch is a state-of-the-art, real-time digital monitoring platform developed by the ITC. This system, a first-of-its-kind in the region, tracks every vehicle’s movement, logs operational data, and enables immediate analysis of any safety incidents or deviations. This robust regulatory framework ensures that all autonomous operations meet the highest standards for navigation, sensor reliability, and emergency response before they are allowed to carry passengers.

Strategic Impact: Why This Launch Matters

The commercial deployment of Level 4 autonomous vehicles carries profound implications for Abu Dhabi and the wider region:

  • Technological Leadership: By being the first in MENA to commercialize this technology, Abu Dhabi solidifies its reputation as a living lab for smart city innovation and a magnet for high-tech investment.

  • Urban Mobility Transformation: This service promises to enhance urban mobility by potentially reducing traffic congestion, lowering accident rates caused by human error, and providing new transport options.

  • Economic Diversification: The initiative sparks new economic opportunities in sectors like artificial intelligence, sensor technology, data analytics, and advanced fleet management, supporting the UAE’s strategic vision to move beyond a hydrocarbon-based economy.

Government Vision and Future Expansion

This launch is a direct realization of Abu Dhabi’s strategic vision to build a smart, sustainable, and integrated mobility ecosystem. By creating a forward-thinking regulatory environment, the emirate has demonstrated its commitment to safely deploying next-generation technologies that improve quality of life and urban efficiency.

The journey is just beginning. The next phase will focus on scaling the service by increasing the number of vehicles, expanding the operational zones across the emirate, and integrating the service seamlessly into public ride-hailing apps. The data and experience gathered from this pioneering phase will be invaluable for informing future policy, infrastructure planning, and the broader adoption of autonomous solutions across the UAE.

A New Chapter for Urban Transport

The successful commercial launch of fully driverless taxis in Abu Dhabi marks a definitive shift from concept to reality. It sets a powerful precedent for the entire Middle East, proving that with the right regulatory framework and technological partnerships, the future of mobility is not a distant dream, but a present-day reality. As these driverless fleets begin logging miles on Abu Dhabi’s streets, the world will be watching, learning from the emirate’s bold step into the next era of transportation.
