Etihad Rail to Link with Al Maktoum Airport, Enabling Flight Check-In at Train Stations
Dubai, UAE – The UAE’s Etihad Rail project is set to transform national travel with a confirmed direct link to Dubai’s future aviation hub, Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC). This strategic integration, confirmed by Dubai Airports CEO Paul Griffiths, marks a pivotal shift towards a seamless, multi-modal transport system for the Emirates.
The cornerstone of this initiative is the plan to allow passengers to check in for their flights and drop off luggage at train stations before arriving at the airport. This “check-in at the station” model, as described by Griffiths, aims to create a frictionless travel experience, fundamentally reimagining the journey from city center to airport lounge.
This rail-air link is a critical component of Dubai’s larger airport infrastructure overhaul. The city is proceeding with its plan to consolidate all passenger operations at the new, mega-capacity Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC). A state-of-the-art terminal, with a budget of Dh128 billion, is designed to handle up to 260 million passengers annually, eventually absorbing all traffic from the current Dubai International Airport (DXB).
Connecting a Nation: The Expansive Etihad Rail Network
The Etihad Rail network is the backbone of the UAE’s surface transport strategy. Upon completion, it will connect 11 key population and logistics centers across the emirates, including:
Abu Dhabi
Dubai
Sharjah
Ras Al Khaimah
Fujairah
Al Ain
The network will also extend to key industrial zones like Ruwais and to the border with Saudi Arabia at Ghuweifat, with an international connection to Sohar, Oman, also in the works.
High-Speed Commute: Abu Dhabi to Dubai in 30 Minutes
A flagship feature of the network will be the high-speed electrified line connecting Abu Dhabi and Dubai. Projected to launch by 2030, this service will slash travel times between the two emirates to just 30 minutes, reaching speeds of up to 350 km/h. The line will feature six strategically located stations:
Reem Island
Yas Island
Saadiyat Island
Zayed Airport (Abu Dhabi)
Near Al Maktoum Airport (DWC)
Al Jaddaf (Dubai)
This service is expected to be a game-changer for daily commuters and business travel, further boosting economic integration.
Strategic Benefits and Inevitable Challenges
The direct integration of Etihad Rail with Al Maktoum Airport presents a host of strategic advantages:
Seamless Passenger Experience: Travelers enjoy a streamlined journey from check-in at the station to their flight gate.
Reduced Road Congestion: The rail link offers a fast, reliable alternative to car travel, easing pressure on major highways.
Enhanced Economic Connectivity: Improved logistics and mobility between emirates stimulates trade and investment.
Sustainable Transport: Electrified rail aligns with the UAE’s broader sustainability and net-zero goals.
However, delivering on this vision requires overcoming significant challenges. This includes the complex logistics of integrating baggage handling systems across different transport modes, ensuring robust last-mile connectivity to the airport terminals, and synchronizing the construction timelines of the rail and airport expansion projects.

A Model for Future-Forward Transport
The planned Etihad Rail station at Al Maktoum International Airport is more than an added convenience; it is a strategic declaration. It positions the UAE as a global leader in integrated transport infrastructure, creating a scalable model that combines high-speed national rail, advanced aviation, and urban mobility into a single, efficient network. As passenger numbers continue to soar, this development ensures the UAE’s infrastructure is not just keeping pace, but setting it for the future.
