Kuwait Introduces Mandatory Licensing for Social Media Influencers

KUWAIT CITY – A new Media Law will soon require all social media influencers and celebrities in Kuwait to obtain a government license before posting paid advertisements. The law, drafted by the Ministry of Information, aims to combat misleading promotions and protect consumers, especially in high-risk sectors like health and real estate.

The licensing process will be managed jointly by the Ministry of Information and the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. Influencers must apply electronically, providing ID and a pledge to adhere to guidelines. Licenses for specific sectors, such as medical products, will require additional approval from the relevant ministry (e.g., Ministry of Health).

The law grants authorities the power to monitor social media for violations, which will be referred to the Public Prosecution. A grace period for compliance will be offered before enforcement begins. The draft law is currently undergoing final legal review before being sent to the Council of Ministers for approval.
