In a world where modern medicine often overshadows traditional healing methods, a few pioneers continue to advocate for the power of holistic and alternative therapies. The Emirates Times had the opportunity to speak with the founder and CEO of The Holistic Alternatives, a leading voice in clinical aromatherapy and natural healing. In this insightful interview, she shares her journey, her passion for education, and her mission to elevate the standards of alternative medicine across the Arab world.
What motivated you to embark on a career in your industry?
I was born in Hong Kong, and from a young age, I was deeply involved in competitive sports, especially squash and hockey. After suffering a back injury, I tried various treatments—physiotherapy, chiropractic care, acupuncture—without lasting relief. It was then that my sister introduced me to a kind aromatherapist. After just one session, my pain significantly subsided. Continued sessions made me feel renewed, and I decided to dedicate my life to learning this science. Since then, I’ve never looked back. Once you enter this field, the learning never stops—it becomes a way of life.

What does a typical day look like for you?
Today, I enjoy a more relaxed lifestyle. I’m blessed with a 6-month-old granddaughter, and my eldest daughter has moved back to Dubai with her family, so I dedicate part of my day to them. I still see clients with chronic conditions, offer guidance based on my knowledge, and teach short courses face to face. I’m also invited by spas to upgrade their therapists’ skills. Courses like Manual Lymphatic Drainage, Reflexology, and Massage remain highly sought after. My days are always filled with meaningful work.
How is your industry evolving, and what trends do you foresee?
The alternative therapy industry has grown rapidly in the UAE. However, I always urge clients to verify their therapist’s credentials. Becoming a Reiki Master over a weekend and offering services thereafter isn’t advisable. Clients should always know what products are being used and research who is treating them. Many practitioners today are self-taught without professional training. My belief is that no one can heal you—only you can heal yourself. We are merely facilitators. Like doctors constantly update their knowledge, we must also stay current through professional development. I studied NLP, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Time Line Therapy, Hypnosis, and Regression Therapy (with Dr. Brian Weiss) to offer comprehensive care. Often, a client’s physical issue has psychological roots—and that’s where true transformation begins.
Can you share any pivotal career moments?
There have been many, but I’m especially passionate about working with People of Determination. In 2007, we opened the first Aromatherapy/Jin Shin Jyutsu clinic at the Al Noor Centre for special needs. I loved working with the children and teaching their parents therapeutic techniques. We extended this work to SNF Development Centre in Bur Dubai, volunteering with children and empowering mothers with tools to support their child’s healing journey.
Another memorable moment was co-authoring “She is Remarkable” with MENA Speakers—an anthology celebrating women’s stories, which became a bestseller in the UAE. I also regularly speak and chair panels at traditional medicine conferences and recently completed my tenure as a board member at the International Federation of Professional Aromatherapists.
What inspired you to establish The Holistic Alternatives and focus on transforming the health industry?
The Holistic Alternatives was born after I closed The Holistic Institute in 2014—the first institute in Dubai to offer internationally accredited diplomas in Clinical Aromatherapy, Reflexology, Massage, and more. New regulations required students to leave the country for two years to gain experience, which I felt was unfair. Rather than compromise on integrity, I chose to shut down the institute.
My journey in Dubai began in 1999 with Essensuals Aromatherapy Centre, where I had four treatment rooms catering to both men and women. After earning my Adult Teaching Diploma from City and Guilds, I returned to education. With a freelance license, I now teach globally. Today, we run an online platform where students can earn an International Diploma in Clinical Aromatherapy from the UK-based International Federation of Professional Aromatherapists.
As CEO of The Holistic Alternatives, how do you shape the organization’s strategy, partnerships, and impact across Arab Health?
My role is centered on teaching and sharing my expertise, especially in Clinical Aromatherapy—my area of greatest passion. Aromatherapy is often misunderstood. Crafting a blend for someone with a chronic condition requires in-depth education, research, and years of case studies. With new essential oils and extractions like CO2 entering the market, staying updated is crucial.
I’ve been privileged to speak at conferences, host workshops, and appear on radio and TV shows, using these platforms to spread awareness about scientifically backed therapies and my own experiences.
What challenges have you encountered on this journey, and what lessons have you learned working in the Arab Health industry?
One early challenge was licensing. When I opened Essensuals Aromatherapy Centre, I was only granted a “ladies salon” license—alternative therapies weren’t recognized in 1999. After six months of negotiations, I was granted a “specialized rehabilitation” license, allowing me to treat both genders—a first in Dubai. Unfortunately, the license was never properly updated in the system, and repeated fines for treating men led to immense stress. Eventually, I suffered partial paralysis in my right arm and had to sell the business.
Later, when I launched The Holistic Institute in 2010, new regulations mandated that graduates must leave the UAE for two years to gain work experience. My efforts to establish a training spa for practical learning were not approved, and I had to let the vision go. Each obstacle taught me patience, resilience, and the importance of aligning with the right regulatory frameworks.
What is your long-term vision for The Holistic Alternatives and your contribution to the Arab health industry?
My vision is to expand our online digital training platform into a robust, global community. Students can connect, share case studies, and engage in discussions to deepen their knowledge. For those not offering hands-on massage, this platform is ideal—particularly for international students seeking professional certification from a reputable global body.
The program spans 1.5 years and includes assignments, case studies, and multiple-choice exams. For UAE-based students, we also offer blended learning and face-to-face instruction for those who want to master practical therapies like therapeutic massage.
Conclusion

Her journey is a testament to resilience, continuous learning, and an unwavering commitment to holistic healing. As the health landscape evolves, voices like hers remind us of the balance between ancient wisdom and modern science—ensuring that wellness remains both inclusive and transformative.
