This year, on September 1st, the UAE announced a two-month amnesty program that will “allow violators with a new opportunity to regularise their visa status.” The nation’s amnesty program allowed many foreigners to see their friends, family and loved ones again after years of living illegally.
August 1, 2018, marked the start of the UAE’s third residency amnesty since 2007. Thousands of people started over with the hope that they wouldn’t have to live in fear anymore. As a result of this move, residency violators were able to easily change their status or exit the country.
The federal government extended it until December 31, 2018, even though it was only announced for 90 days, ending on October 31, 2018. Those whose absconding cases were resolved could obtain regular employment and residency status. One person even went home to get married after her significant overstaying fine was waived.
Many amnesty centres were established throughout the United Arab Emirates, and the general reprieve made headlines for several days. Many overstayed residents came to the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA)-Dubai located in Al Awir, Dubai. Even though it was a hot summer day, the people there were full of hope, so they did not mind the heat.
