IPL2024: Hyderabad Wins By a Single Run While Rajasthan Struggles

In a tense Indian Premier League match on Thursday, Sunrisers Hyderabad upset table-toppers Rajasthan Royals by an unlikely one-run victory.

Rajasthan’s Rovman Powell, needing two off the last ball, misplayed the full toss and was caught in front of the wicket by India international Bhuvneshwar Kumar. The right-arm swing bowler, who finished with figures of 41-3, had earlier damaged Rajasthan’s innings by dismissing captain Sanju Samson and star England batsman Jos Butler for nought in the opening over of the chase.

Young Indian batsmen Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rayan Parag rebuilt the innings after the early blowouts with counterattacking half-centuries, and Rajasthan looked certain to win easily.

However, a collapse was set in motion when Jaiswal (67 off 40 balls) and Parag (77 off 49) fell to left-arm pacer T Natrajan in quick succession. In a stingy penultimate over, Hyderabad captain Pat Cummins gave up just seven runs, swinging the game in the home team’s advantage. Knowing the nature of the IPL, you never win until you actually win the game,” stated Samson.

After Buttler and he were dismissed for ducks in the opening over, Samson was all over the young pair Jaiswal and Parag for salvaging the innings for the Royals. Credit goes to both youngsters (Jaiswal and Parag), myself, and Jos (Buttler) who got out in the powerplay. They played well and got us to that position,” Samson commented. With their in-form opener Abhishek Sharma falling for 12 off 10 balls, the Rajasthan Royals got off to a plodding and shaky start to their innings.
