Kerala State Closes Colleges and Schools Due to Extreme Heat

Due to the extreme heat, the Indian state of Kerala has closed all of its schools and colleges until Monday. Coastal area residents are advised to limit their sun exposure and take precautions to avoid starting wildfires.

The weather service has predicted an exceptionally high number of heatwave days for April to June, despite the fact that most of India is suffering from extreme heatwaves while the nation holds a general election with low voter turnout.

Kerala rarely experiences heat waves, but according to data from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the state experienced five heatwave days in April.

The IMD stated on Wednesday that El Nino years usually have more heating, with hot and dry weather in Asia and heavier rains in parts of the Americas. This statement was made about the current El Nino weather pattern. Heatwaves were being caused, according to the IMD, by fewer thunderstorms and an anti-cyclonic circulation close to India’s southeast coast.

On Thursday, the state government of Kerala asked people to limit their time in the sun and asked authorities to monitor conditions to prevent fires. The government also asked all educational institutions to close until Monday, as several districts had issued heatwave warnings.

According to experts who spoke with Reuters, heatwaves have also caused school closures in some areas of Asia and North Africa, increasing the learning gaps between developed nations and those in tropical regions.
